Reflection on Language games

On 15 September 2009, members of each group had prepared language games on the primary school students that had selected by the own group. The language games that I had enjoyed so much is the group of Elania, Jennie, Shirley, Dayangku Nurhanis and Effendy. Their language game that they had organized was so interesting and fun. From this game, students should have good memory and good in listening. Students needed to pass the message from the first the person until the last person. Then, we checked the answer of the past person got. We got different and funny answer at last. This language games activity suitable for level two students in their group activity. Other group also had language games that are interesting and fun too.

After had a practicum for a month, it is the ime to get back to the study life in institute. It had been a month I did not write the blog. In this week lecture, the last topic that we studied is semantics. There were a lot of sub topic that I needed to learn. For example, denotative and connotative meaning, hyponymys, antonymys, synonymys, polysemys and others. My lecturer also had asked us to find various of idioms and proverbs from the internet. I had gained a lot of knowledge about idioms and proverbs from the findings. I had downloaded it as my reference in my future.

This week my lecturer had taught a new topic on syntax. From the lesson, i learnt to identify the determinant, the verb, the adverb, the noun, and the adjective by using the tree diagram. My lecturer also asked us to make a sentence with the guidance of tree diagram. Besides that, we also were asked to prepare a word game for primary school students. Although there were some groups had not present their games, the most interesting activities and games that attracted me was Shirley, Jennie, Dayangku Nurhanis and Elania’s group. Their games were very interesting and fun. Students can learn new words from there. It was fun and enjoyable.

This week my lecturer had us to write an individual essay on how Malaysian culture affects English Language. We had disscussed some factors when the tutorial time. The factors that affected the English Language are multicultural society, urban dan rural settings, political/historical influences and educational policies. When writing this essay, I found some difficulties in finding the information from the internet. Besides that, this week also new learn topic on syntax. In this topic, I learnt more clear about the noun phrase, verb phrase and others. Learning English need a lot of rules.

Reflection (Blog week 5) In this week, I had learnt a new topic on morphemes. I had learnt this topic before during my foundation but it was in Bahasa medium. So for the English medium, this is the first time I learnt about morphemes. Morpheme is a combination of sounds that have a meaning. A morpheme does not necessarily have to be a word. For example, the word cats have two morphemes. “Cat” is a morpheme, and “s” is a morpheme. Every morpheme is either a base or an affix. An affix can be either a prefix or a suffix. I also learnt about free morpheme, bound morpheme, inflectional morpheme and derivational morpheme in this week lecture. It was quite easy for me to understand those morphemes by showing the some example from my lecturer. Besides that, I also needed to memorize the definition of each morpheme.

In this week, our class had presented a language function of a role play. In this task, we had to act it out and our classmates need to identify the language function. For example: to greet, to remind, to complain, to explain, to suggest and many more. It was interesting and fun. I enjoyed the learning process.

My lecturer also had gave us the coursework for this semester. I felt scared and worried after I read the coursework. It seemed quite difficult for me to handle and master it. I hope my lecturer will help me and give some guidelines for me to do the task. Thank you.

I enjoyed the lesson for last week and this week. In the first week, my lecturer had taught us on language and communication. I also gain a lot of knowledge and information on how culture affects English language. Factors that affects English language are multicultural society major ethnic group and dialect groups, urban and rural settings, political/historical influence, educational policies, socialization and economic status.

Besides that, learning English should be fun so that we will not feel bored and scared of English. For example this week each groups were asked to prepare and present a 3 minute mime (non-verbal communication) and the other students need to guess of the situation. I enjoyed and had fun. It was an interesting activities. I also learn various tongue twisters beside what I had knew before. It was great.
